I Want To Be Able To Survive! What Can I Do?

The answer is simple: Prepare! Preparing will not guarantee that you (and your family) survive, but doing so will probably increase your chances exponentially if things really get bad. In addition, even if things don't get really bad but are just bad, your having "prepared" will make you and your family's experience (and stress levels) considerably better until things return to normal.

So, knowing that you want to survive and are willing to take the time and make the effort to "prepare" to accomplish that, what do you do?

First, you need to increase your knowledge of how to survive. We all know some things already that we will be able to use in a crisis situation, but you can never know too much. What you will be doing is adding to what you already know. One easy way to do this is obtain/purchase several good survival books and read them from cover to cover. Once you have done that then read them again - - making notes to yourself and annotations in the books themselves. However, it is very important for you to choose the right survival books to study. Once you start looking, you will find that there are many, many survival books to choose from and that many of these books are not that good or duplicate what other books cover. One good way to find the best books is to find several different recommended survival book lists and then identify those survival books that are on three or more of the lists. There is no single survival book that contains everything you will want to know about survival, so you will end up choosing several different books that will have some duplication but which will also cover some additional topics. Second, determine what survival supplies that you will need to survive and purchase them in advance. It will be too late if you wait until the emergency, disaster, or crisis happens to try and find survival supplies. (Note: Some of the toughest decisions may be in your deciding what type of disaster/crisis you will probably be confronted with and how extensive a problem it will be.) Looking at recommended survival supplies checklists is one good way to do this. You will find that almost all of the checklists will list the same basic items (because survival itself is pretty basic) with some variation. In addition, when you look at these checklists, you will find that you already have some of these items but there will probably also be others that you will need to obtain (e.g., survival food pouches, specific items of survival gear). Another good way is to talk to others who have already gone through this process and find out what items they recommend.

After you have gone through these checklists and decided which items you need to obtain (e.g., maybe a firestarter and a new tent), customer reviews (e.g., on Amazon) are usually an excellent way to separate the good products from the bad products and to help you decide which particular brand/style/features that you would prefer. Finally, once you have obtained the additional survival supplies/gear you decided that you needed, don't just keep them in their box. You need to take the time to practice using them - - - for example, using your new firestarter to start your outdoor grill several times or setting up your new tent in your backyard several times. You don't want to wait until the disaster happens to try and learn how something works.

Take the above steps, and I guarantee you have just increased the odds of you and your family surviving in a very bad crisis situation. Click here to see the survival gear items that I recommend that you have on my own survival supplies checklist.
